TODAY: Congressman John Lewis, Progressive Leaders Pocan & Grijalva, LGBTQ House Caucus Co-Chairs, Members of Congressional Black & Hispanic Caucuses, & Additional Colleagues formally endorse Joe Kennedy for U.S. Senate

Washington, D.C. – Citing his record of national leadership on health care, civil rights, immigration reform and other critical issues, a diverse slate of House Democrats formally endorsed Joe Kennedy III in his race for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

The endorsements reflect a range of colleagues across the geographic, demographic and ideological spectrum, highlighting Kennedy’s ability to build far-reaching political coalitions and the leadership he has demonstrated throughout his time in the House of Representatives.

“In the years that I have known Joe Kennedy I have seen him stand up and fight -- time and again -- for the suffering, the struggling and the silenced," said Congressman John Lewis (GA-5). "At a moment of profound national crisis, Joe offers our country the kind of powerful moral leadership it needs. He is a clear voice for justice and dignity in our rising generation of public servants. I am proud to endorse his run for the U.S. Senate."

Lewis was joined by co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congressman Mark Pocan, and chair emeriti, Congressman Raul Grijalva.

“For as long as I have known him, Congressman Kennedy has been fighting to dismantle the stubborn, structural inequities that leave too many Americans behind,” said Pocan (WI-2). “As a proud, progressive voice in Washington, Joe has been a tireless champion for social and economic justice. From fighting for mental health parity, to protecting the rights of transgender Americans and advocating for a more inclusive economy, Joe offers the moral clarity and energized leadership that our country and party need today more than ever before."

“More than just voicing and voting for progressive values, Joe can build coalitions and unite his colleagues behind progressive causes,” said Grijalva (AZ-3). “That’s the moral clarity that this moment demands in the United States Senate.”

Also endorsing Kennedy are co-chairs of the LGBTQ Equality Caucus, Rep. David Cicilline and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. Kennedy serves as chair of the Equality Caucus’ Trans Task Force.

“I’m proud today to endorse my good friend, Joe Kennedy, for the U.S. Senate. In the House, Joe has been an unflinching ally in the struggle for full LGBTQ equality,” said Cicilline (RI-1). “I’ve seen his commitment to justice and equality firsthand in his strong and passionate leadership of the Trans Equality Task Force and his critical support of the Equality Act. Joe Kennedy has been a serious legislator and has never stopped fighting for the people of Massachusetts by working to raise wages for working families, lower health care costs, and taking on Donald Trump’s corrupt administration. He will be an outstanding United States Senator.”

"Not every LGBTQ ally talks the talk and walks the walk, but Joe has been a fierce advocate for equal rights,” said Maloney (NY-18). “His record clearly shows his commitment to those who have been left behind, and his vision is one that will move every American forward. What has defined Joe for me since the day I met him is his loyalty to the values he holds and the people he serves. I am proud to call him a friend and look forward to hearing his voice echo throughout the United States Senate.”

Along with Lewis, other members of the Congressional Black Caucus also endorsed Kennedy including: Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, Rep. Joyce Beatty, and Rep. Marc Veasey.

"Joe Kennedy III brings moral clarity, personal integrity and seemingly limitless passion every day to fighting for people who don't have a voice," said Johnson (TX-30). "I believe he is the right person at this moment in history to speak out and stand up for the values we all share. We need strong voices in our Senate, ones to elevate those that are too often ignored. Joe will be that voice."

"Whether tackling health care, voting rights or the environment, Joe Kennedy understands the inequities too often entrenched in our policies and the need to take a different approach," said Beatty (OH-3). "Having served alongside him, I know the passion he has for bringing everyone to the table and making government work for all. We need more U.S. Senators like him."

"Few people I know bring the deep knowledge of the issues mixed with the passion to institute change like my friend Joe Kennedy III," said Veasey (TX-33). "As a colleague on the Energy and Commerce Committee, I sit a few chairs down from Joe and I can say definitively that when he speaks - people listen. He does his homework. He never backs down. That is what we need from our leaders today. That is why I support Joe Kennedy III for Senate."

Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus joined their colleagues in endorsing Kennedy, including Chair Rep. Joaquin Castro, Rep. Juan Vargas, Rep. Filomen Vela, Rep. Linda Sanchez, and Rep. Gil Cisneros.

“Joe Kennedy fights for the rights and dignity of everyone, and he's dedicated to building a more inclusive country where everyone can achieve their dreams,” said Castro (TX-20). “On multiple occasions, Joe took action and came to Texas on our southern border to see firsthand the faces of those devastated by the Trump administration's cruel and inhumane immigration policies. Joe is the kind of strong leader we need in the U.S. Senate."

“Congressman Kennedy is one of those rare elected officials that recognizes the need to get to the root of the problem, and sees the intersectionality of the many issues we try to tackle in Washington on a everyday basis,” said Vargas (CA-51). “Coming from a culturally diverse district, I feel we need more people like him in the Senate to lead the way for more constructive and meaningful change in our country.”

“Joe Kennedy, time and time again, has demonstrated the leadership, determination, and judgement that we need in a U.S. Senator,” said Vela (TX-34). “From immigration to health care, energy to economic mobility, Joe has shown his deep knowledge and understanding of the issues and values that we hold dear. During this moment in history, we’re lucky to have him in Washington and I look forward to his leadership for years to come.”

“As co-founder of the Labor and Working Families Caucus, I know I can count on Joe Kennedy to steadfastly stick up for America’s hardworking families,” said Sanchez (CA-38). “When crafting legislation, talking policy, and advocating for change, he focuses on the impact our Washington work has on the working class. I’m proud to stand by his side and support his run for U.S. Senate.”

“I’m proud to endorse Congressman Joe Kennedy for U.S. Senate,” said Cisneros (CA-39). “Joe is a leader on countless issues in Washington and tirelessly champions those that need representation. From veterans to the middle class, students buried with debt to communities of color, Joe Kennedy uses his platform to elevate the voices Washington needs to hear.”

Also endorsing Kennedy today is a diverse group of friends and colleagues, including: Rep. Derek Kilmer, Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, Rep. Annie Kuster, Rep. Conor Lamb, and Rep. Stephanie Murphy.

“Joe Kennedy goes the extra mile,” said Kilmer (WA-6). “Not only does he vote our Democratic values and leads bills to advance those values, he works every day to build a party that will live up to those values. He travels the country building a better Democratic Party, shaping the future of our government, and meeting people where they are. As a U.S. Senator, I know he’ll keep up that fight for a better future for all of us.”

“Joe Kennedy has shown remarkable leadership on health care for all in this country,” said Kirkpatrick (AZ-2). “From holding pharmaceutical companies accountable to advocating for mental health parity, Joe is on the frontlines of fighting to ensure all Americans have the ability to access quality care. It’s what this country needs more of and why I’m supporting him for his run for U.S. Senate.”

"I'm proud to endorse my good friend Joe Kennedy for Senate because I know the strength of his compassion and commitment to bettering the lives of those most in need," said Kuster (NH-2). "Serving on the Energy and Commerce Committee together, I've seen firsthand his leadership on the issues most important to the people of New England and the country: lowering the costs of prescription drugs, expanding access to health care, and fighting climate change. I'm confident that as a member of the Senate, Joe will continue to be a powerful voice for hardworking families across our nation."

“Since I first came to Congress, Joe Kennedy has been a great friend and mentor who has helped me learn how to best serve my constituents, build relationships in both parties, and get things done,” said Lamb (PA-7). “ Joe showed up to help me in a tough race. As a Senator, I know he’ll show up every single day and find a way to get things done for the people of Massachusetts.”

“Joe Kennedy has always been a fighter for the middle class,” said Murphy (FL-7). “He gets that to build up America, we must champion working families in our policies and legislation. I have no doubt that he’ll bring that same drive and purpose to the U.S. Senate.”
